Helping children learn
The Wiggles Alphabet Cards offer many opportunities for learning. Collect all 26 Wiggles cards, which can be found in every Healtheries/ The Wiggles Product such as Fruit Fills, Bickies Multibox or Sharepack and Ricey Bites.
The recently released Early Childhood Learning framework for Australia emphasises the importance of children becoming effective communicators. Children’s emerging literacy is enhanced when they are given opportunities to become familiar with the many tools of literacy. The Wiggles Alphabet Cards help children become aware of sounds and letters.
Each card shows the letter in upper and lower case (A a) and the word is written completely in lower case. When they are learning to read, children mostly encounter words that are all in lower case.
The illustrations are all related to healthy living. Some of the fruits and vegetables will be ones your children know and like, others they may be aware of but have not as yet tried, and yet others will introduce them to new foods.
You might also like to take the opportunity to serve fruits and vegetables your family does not usually eat.
As your children begin to collect the cards, you can encourage them to try the activities mentioned and also to identify the various fruits and vegetables when they visit a fruit market. You can also point out the names of the fruits and vegetables that are written on signs in the shops.
Extend their education
- Point out other places in the community where the same letter appears.
- Children can be encouraged to identify the letter on a card which is the letter/sound with which their own name begins.
- Children can be encouraged to sort and match the cards according to whether they show an activity, a fruit or a vegetable
- If children manage to collect a double set they can be encouraged to find the pairs, to play “snap” and to use the cards to play a memory game.
